If you are weighing a Reddit push for AI visibility, look at the model behind the chart before you look at the number.
Promvia, an AI visibility tracker, ran 40 buyer questions through six answer engines for eight weeks and reports that its ChatGPT and Claude lanes cited reddit.com zero times, while Gemini cited it in 193 of 320 answers, or 60.3 percent. Its report says Reddit disappeared from the ChatGPT lane on Aug. 31, 2026, the day that lane moved to gpt-4o-mini.
A model switch on the same day is a confound, and I would rule it out before reading that zero as a fact about ChatGPT. A second study, covered by Search Engine Land on Oct. 22, 2026, has a similar gap.
Promvia published the full write-up and its rows on Oct. 23, 2026, and the setup is where the story is.
The timeline starts before the data does. Promvia's report says: "Our instrument log records Reddit disappearing from the ChatGPT lane on 31 August 2026, the day that lane moved to gpt-4o-mini." The published rows begin on Sept. 3 and cannot show the before. That part rests on the log.
From Sept. 3 to Oct. 19, 2026, Promvia says it put the same 40 buyer questions to six engines once a week, 1,920 checks and 1,883 answers in all. It asked Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude through their APIs with web search, and it read Google AI Overviews and AI Mode from Google's results page. The report names the ChatGPT lane as gpt-4o-mini and Claude as claude-haiku-4-5-20251001. ChatGPT gave 320 answers in that time and Claude 291.
Gemini cited Reddit in 60.3 percent of its answers and AI Overviews in 37.3 percent. AI Mode cited it in 18.8 percent and Perplexity in 4.7 percent. In Promvia's data, ChatGPT and Claude cited it zero times.

The report's own caution is plain: "These zeros describe these configurations on these questions, not the consumer apps." It adds that the ChatGPT lane moved again, to gpt-5-mini, on Oct. 21, 2026, after the window closed. OpenAI's release notes list GPT-6 models for ChatGPT.
The Envoyra study has its own version of the gap. On Oct. 22, 2026, Search Engine Land's Danny Goodwin covered it. Envoyra, an AI visibility vendor, analyzed 2,720 answers over four weeks, from Sept. 13 to Oct. 4, using 170 buyer-style questions per assistant each week. Of 680 question-and-assistant combinations, 536, or 79 percent, changed their recommended brands at least once. Goodwin reports that ChatGPT on GPT-4o and Perplexity on sonar-pro used web search, while Claude on Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini on 2.5 Flash did not. He adds that Envoyra did not publish its test questions and that the results may differ from what users see in consumer assistants. Envoyra measured recommended brands rather than cited sources, but the lesson carries over. The configuration shapes what you see.
On Oct. 23, 2026, the Promvia numbers reached r/GEO_optimization, where the user Ken_Numbers challenged the dates. Promvia's report says its first run was Thursday, Sept. 3, and every later run was a Monday. Ken_Numbers said the post's every-Monday line did not fit that window. The date matters, he said, because the report relies on it to place the model change before the window opened. He also questioned the report's line that Reddit and YouTube reach "Google's two surfaces and Gemini on these questions and little else." The report's own table shows ChatGPT citing YouTube in 23.8 percent of answers. Promvia's u/woodoo139 replied that the dataset ships with every row and a recount script, and promised to correct any number that does not recount.
The same day, Ross Simmonds, founder of Foundation Marketing, wrote on X that one Reddit thread can now influence buyers across several platforms without the brand spending a dollar to promote it. That is a claim about buyer influence, and neither study tests it. Promvia and Envoyra both sell in the AI visibility category. Disclosure: my agency, ViewEngine, sells AI visibility work and builds its own tracking tools.
My read is that the zero tells you how one lane behaved in one configuration. Promvia's log shows a model switch on the same day, and a switch is enough to explain a change without saying anything about ChatGPT the app. I would not move Reddit budget in either direction on it.
The Google rows are more directly relevant to what buyers see, because AI Overviews and AI Mode are read from Google's results page. Reddit appeared in 37.3 percent of AI Overviews answers and 18.8 percent of AI Mode answers in this panel. Those are citation counts, and I treat citations as diagnostics. Whether a Reddit presence changes what an engine recommends, or whether buyers search your name afterward, is what a Reddit investment is meant to move. Neither study measured it. In the handful of cases I traced, the Reddit comments that got cited were the ones that filled a gap the authoritative sources left open. That is my read from those cases, and this data does not test it.
Before you move budget either way, I would want to know which model and which search setting produced the number.
